Recruiting staff is a costly but important exercise. Once you have advertised, interviewed and selected the right person for your organisation, the next important step is their induction or onboarding.

How many times have you, on your first day in a new job, been directed to sit at a desk and given piles of documents, policies and procedures to read through? If you are lucky, you will have been assigned a ‘buddy’ who may have been helpful and shown you where to get a coffee. If, like me, you think there is a better way to start a job, read on.

Everyone benefits from a well-considered induction or onboarding programme.  There are always going to be documents and policies that you need to ensure a new member of staff is aware of but consider how you can share these and whether they all need to be given on day one.  You may be able to use e-learning resources to ensure that policies are understood.

Health and safety are obvious priorities in any organisation and new staff members need to understand the procedures to follow; it is no use telling them about fire evacuation procedures on day 5!

Everyone will benefit from meeting existing staff and seeing where they work.  A tour of the relevant departments will enable a new staff member to start to put names to faces and also start to understand the culture of your organisation.

Induction arrangements will differ if the new employee will be working remotely and your organisation does not have the use of a static office space.  Consider ways in which you can ensure that the new staff member does not feel isolated; buddies or mentors are great but make sure they have the right skills and knowledge and that they really do want to be a mentor or buddy.

A great way to quickly fit new staff into the powerful culture of your organisation is to use the Everything DiSC® Application Suite.

Using Everything DiSC Workplace® adds value to your business by engaging every individual in building more effective relationships at work.

Everything DiSC Workplace® is a classroom training and personalised learning experience that can benefit every person in the organisation – regardless of title or position, department or function – in building more productive and effective relationships at work.

It teaches participants to understand themselves and others, while learning to appreciate the different priorities, preferences and values each individual brings to the workplace.

With personalised insights and actionable strategies, participants learn how to adapt to the style of others, ultimately improving engagement, collaboration, and the overall quality of the workplace.

Once a new employee has completed an Everything DiSC Workplace assessment, you can benefit from reviewing a new group culture report and comparisons reports to see how their styles and preferences work with the rest of the team.  Employees can also use MyEverythingDiSC.com® to compare themselves with others. This is a great ice-breaker for new staff.

Organisations that use Everything DiSC benefit in so many ways. New staff can quickly understand others’ styles and existing staff can readily identify the best ways to work with new staff members.  This knowledge saves time and ensures new staff quickly integrate and you can start to unlock the potential of your people and the power of your culture.
